The ONLY possible way that a Ford starter could turn the engine backward would be if an opposite rotation starter had been swapped for the correct one. As in a marine engine or some weird reverse rotation engine application. Simply reversing the rotation of the starter motor would not let the drive clutch turn the motor. The starter fits into the first gear, which drives a second gear, called the idler. That idler gear turns the clutch gear. Discussion Starter #1 Nov 2, 2018. I recently rebuilt the NP435 trans and NP205 transfer case on my son#x27;s 1977 ford f150. Both rebuilds seemed very straight forward and went smoothly. After installation the truck transmission shifts fantastic and I am very happy with it. However, the transfer case seems to only find two positions 4L and N. I have cleaned the inside of my e-start and checked the ignition coil. But after the rebuilt it spins backwards? But why? What have I done wrong? My manual does not show drawings of the inside of the e-starter. It is just a cable that goes to the starter and I have not touched the rest of the electricity system.
